COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — The dean of the engineering school at the University of Maryland has been named the school's next president.

The University System of Maryland announced Wednesday evening that Darryll J. Pines will become the College Park school's 34th president. His appointment is effective July 1.

Pines has spent 25 years on the College Park campus, and he has served as both dean and the Nariman Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Clark School since January 2009.

Pines succeeds retiring president Wallace D. Loh, who will step down in June.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - The University of Maryland will dedicate a building in College Park to Parren Mitchell, the first black person elected to Congress from Maryland.

The university will dedicate the Art-Sociology Building on Thursday. Mitchell was the first African American student to earn a graduate degree from the college.

Mitchell was elected to Congress in in 1970, and was one of the 13 founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus. He died in 2007.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Officials say a Maryland college student won't return to campus this semester after an email he sent filled with racist and sexist language was made public.

University of Maryland College Park officials announced Wednesday that the decision was made by "mutual consent" with the student, who sent the email to fraternity brothers in January 2014. The school's investigation is continuing.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - State auditors say sensitive data in computers at the University of Maryland-College Park remains vulnerable to hackers five years after administrators were told about security flaws.

The university said Thursday that the shortcomings identified in a 2009 audit weren't related to a data breach in February involving the records of about 288,000 students, faculty and staff members.

Salisbury University has been ranked in the nation’s top 15 percent in undergraduate education according to “The Princeton Review”.

In the 2015 edition of The Best 379 Colleges it highlighted the school’s diverse student body, commitment to fields of study and the variety of student activities.

Rob Franeck, the guide’s author, said that the outstanding academics were the principle reason for selecting the school.
