As much as twenty percent of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from some form of PTSD or brain injury. Delmarva Public Radio's Don Rush takes a look at what one vet is offering up to help out. And it's man's best friend. In part one, he explores the effects from the wartime experience.

Representative Andy Harris says he supports President Donald Trump’s suspension of the refugee program and the imposition of a travel ban on immigrants coming from seven predominantly Muslim countries.

In a statement issued by his office the Eastern Shore Republican said that the temporary ban would better protect national security.

He noted that these seven countries were marked for higher scrutiny by the Obama administration.

Harris also applauded the decision to give preference to religious minorities fleeing persecution.

Maryland's First Congressional District will see incumbent Republican Andy Harris seek a fourth term in this year's election after being swept into office during the Tea Party wave of 2010. His rival is Harford County Democrat Joe Werner who won a surprising victory over former Salisbury Mayor and now council member Jim Ireton. Delmarva Public Radio's Don Rush caught up with the congressman to talk about the issues and the possibility that Washington could once again see divided government.

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Maryland Air National Guard is preparing to make its first major deployment in the U.S.-led fight against the Islamic State group.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the Maryland National Guard is set to return to the Middle East this fall as part of Operation Inherent Resolve.

President Barack Obama has declined to put regular U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq and Syria, but the administration has for several months been involved in a bombing campaign designed to stop the terror group.

This week the nation marked Veterans Day. The United States has been in an active military conflict for the last 14 years in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Salisbury Mayor-Elect Jake Day, a Lieutenant in the Maryland Army National Guard, talked with  Delmarva Public Radio's Don Rush about the meaning of the day and the deployment the men and women in uniform since 911.

NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - Delaware will name its National Guard headquarters in New Castle for Beau Biden.
 
Gov. Jack Markell announced the honor Tuesday for the former attorney general and Army National Guard major who died of brain cancer in May.
 
A ceremony will be held in the spring to unveil signs for the "Major Joseph R. (Beau) Biden III Armed Forces Reserved Center." The center houses the Army and Air National Guard and local U.S. Navy Reserve.

With the Afghan war winding down and the Iraq war now over many children are faced with the loss of a parent in those conflicts.
