If one Delaware lawmaker has his way school in the state would start after Labor Day.

State Senate Minority Leader Gerald Hocker told WRDE that he believed that businesses in the First State would benefit from such a delay.

The Delaware Republican said that the first effort was able to get past the Senate but then failed as time ran out for the session.

Steve Maneri has been chosen to fill the fifth seat on the Millville town council left vacant when Deputy Mayor Jon Subity decided not to seek another term.

Mayor Gerald Hocker told the Salisbury Daily Times that while others had expressed interest Maneri was the only one to apply.

Maneri has served on the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission for the last two years.

Before coming to Delaware he served for six years as a Town Council member in Monroe, New York.

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A Republican state senator is proposing legislation to study whether all Delaware public schools should wait until after Labor Day to start classes.

Sen. Gerald Hocker of Ocean View says the move could mean more money for Delawareans, particularly high school students with summer jobs.

Hocker says only two of Delaware's 19 public school districts, both in Sussex County, started classes after Labor Day last year.
