FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Hunters for the Hungry says deer meat donations are down by more than 11 tons compared to last year.
The nonprofit says on its website that 140,472 pounds had been donated as of Dec. 16. That's the lowest total in 17 years.
The Free Lance-Star reports that the organization had hoped to process about 370,000 pounds of meat this hunting season. It's sending letters to hunters who previously provided deer to help make up the shortfall.
