Perdue Farms is donating $1 million to support its Feeding America-affiliated food bank partners through its foundation.

WBOC reports that this is a companywide effort that provides protein to those struggling with their food budget.

Randy Day, CEO of Perdue Farms, noted that one in nine American struggle with getting enough food for themselves and their families.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington, D.C., says most Delawareans who receive food stamps may see a gap in benefits due to the government shutdown.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports Delaware issued February SNAP benefits in January to the state's 136,000 recipients to avoid shutdown-related benefit cuts.

Perdue will sending at least 1 million pounds of protein to southeastern Texas in help Houston and the surrounding area in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

The food will be sent to the local Feeding America-affiliated food banks and the Houston Independent School District.

The poultry company has already sent a half million pounds to the school district to feed the victims of the hurricane.

About half is being sent to the Houston as well San Antonio and Victoria.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Hunters for the Hungry says deer meat donations are down by more than 11 tons compared to last year.

The nonprofit says on its website that 140,472 pounds had been donated as of Dec. 16. That's the lowest total in 17 years.

The Free Lance-Star reports that the organization had hoped to process about 370,000 pounds of meat this hunting season. It's sending letters to hunters who previously provided deer to help make up the shortfall.
