The coronavirus pandemic has left many families in need particularly those who have lost their jobs or have been temporarily laid off because businesses have closed their doors. Director of Regional Services Jennifer Small for the Maryland Food Bank of the Eastern Shore told Delmarva Public Radio's Don Rush that her organization has been hit with declining donations just at the time that demand has risen.


ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A private liberal arts college with campuses in New Mexico and Maryland has seen a spike in donations since announcing plans to decrease tuition.

St. John's College reported more than 1,000 small gifts in its annual fund, totaling more than $750,000 since September. The Capital Gazette reports the amount is nearly twice as much what the annual fund raised during the same period in 2017.

Some $70-thousand has been raised on Maryland’s Lower Shore for victims of Hurricane Harvey that struck Texas and Louisiana.

The effort was led by the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore which donated $5-thousand of its own money in matching funds.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the money will be distributed by the Greater Houston Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.

The Eastern Shore foundation president Erica Joseph told the paper that it was gratifying to see local residents come together to help those out in the aftermath of the storm.


The Community Foundation of the Eastern has begun taking in donations for its Disaster Relief Fund to help those hit by tropical storm Harvey.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the foundation will match the first $5-thousand.

The money will be given to the Greater Houston Community Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund for long term recovery.


WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington is asking parishes in Delaware and on Maryland's Eastern Shore to take up a special collection this weekend to aid victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Bishop Francis Malooly said Monday that if parishes are not able to take up the collection this weekend, he is hoping the collection can take place the following weekend.

Diocesan officials say all donations will go to assist Catholic Charities USA and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in their efforts to help survivors of the storm.


$370-thousand has been raised in donations for the family of Cpt. Stephen Ballard who was shot and killed by a suspect near a convenience store.

The memorial fund was started by the Delaware State Troopers Association which raised $270-thousand from Delawareans.  

The Wilmington News Journal reports that another $100-thosuand was donated by Wawa.

The shooting took place near one of its convenience stores.

Salvation Army

The bells are ringing and the little red buckets are standing by for holiday shoppers to drop in a donation or two.

But the Salvation Army of the Lower Eastern Shore is falling short this year with donations down about $8-thousand from the figures for 2015.

Major Vic Tidman told WBOC that people may be buying more on line and have less cash in their pockets.

But he said he was hopeful that the donations will pick up so that they Army can meet its fundraising goal of $260-thosuand.

A group of Maryland firefighters will be on their way to North Carolina to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.

They are coordinating with the Lumberton fire company in North Carolina.

WBOC reports that they are seeking supplies that range from bottle water, canned goods and baby food to garbage bags heaters and generators.

In addition, they are in need of plastic silverware and cups as well as cleaning supplies.

Marylanders can drop off their donations at locations in the towns of Stevensville, Grasonville, Centreville and Easton.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Terry McAuliffe is challenging state employees to raise $4.3 million during their annual Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign.

McAuliffe kicked off the campaign this week and set a goal that's 5 percent higher than the $4.1 million donated by state employees last year.

State employees have donated nearly $47 million to more than 1,000 charities since the campaign began in 1997.

Donations have helped children, veterans and people without permanent housing as well as groups that do things like cancer research and land conservation.

Schwartz Center for the Arts

The Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover is expected to get less funding than usual.

Delaware State University and Wesley College not expected to provide money although WBOC reports that Center officials say they have not received any formal notice.

Board President Tracey Miller told the television station the colleges had told the Center three years ago that they might have to cut back.

She said that in the early 2000’s the two colleges stepped in to help the financially struggling arts center with each providing a $60-thousand annual contribution.

Sankofa Cultural Center Website

The Sankofa Cultural Arts Center has opened in Dover providing space for the City Cultural League.

The new building will include room for activities ranging from music and dance to the arts.

Ruben Salters who founded the league told WBOC that he had been working hard over the years to make the structure come to fruition.

A year and a half ago ground was broken.

It cost nearly a million dollars which mainly was provided through donations and fundraisers.  

The facility official opened its doors this past weekend.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Maryland General Assembly has passed a measure to require private donations for inaugural festivities for the governor to be publicly disclosed.

The Senate voted 45-0 on Saturday for the bill, sending it to Gov. Larry Hogan.

An inaugural committee could not be able to receive or disburse money unless it files a statement of organization with the Maryland State Board of Elections and names a treasurer.

The treasurer would be required to file reports that show donations and disbursements of donated money.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Hunters for the Hungry says deer meat donations are down by more than 11 tons compared to last year.

The nonprofit says on its website that 140,472 pounds had been donated as of Dec. 16. That's the lowest total in 17 years.

The Free Lance-Star reports that the organization had hoped to process about 370,000 pounds of meat this hunting season. It's sending letters to hunters who previously provided deer to help make up the shortfall.
