There’s a proposal by Delaware lawmakers to require middle and high school students be provided with  menstrual hygiene products by the next term.

State Representative Valerie Longhhurst told the Wilmington News Journal that, “Period products are not a luxury.”

She added that they are essential but that cost can be a barrier.

Under the measure they would be free of charge and available in school bathrooms.

The Delaware Democrat said that affordability had been a serious burden for low-income families putting stress on children as they grow up.

The paper reports that the legislature unanimously approved a measure that these hygiene products must be made available in the Department of Correction.

In addition, the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families must provide them to people in their care.
