An indictment has been handed down against Dewey Beach police officer Gregory Lynch Jr. for allegedly hitting an already injured man last summer who was on a stretcher.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that Lynch is facing counts involving assault, perjury and official misconduct.

The paper reports that authorities say police and emergency personnel arrived on the scene of a man who had suffered a head injury and lost consciousness.

It was during an effort to get the victim to lie down on a stretcher that the alleged assault occurred.

When the man tried to sit up Lynch allegedly  climbed onto the stretcher and punched him in the face several times.

Witnesses said they had to hold the stretcher down to keep it from flipping over.

Lynch claims that the victim tried to strangle him and committed two counts of offense touching.
