LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Liberty University and Hampton University will each host a U.S. Senate Town Hall featuring Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine and Republican challenger Corey Stewart.

The first Town Hall will be held at Liberty's Center for Music and the Worship Arts on Sept. 20. The second event will be held at Hampton's Convocation Center on Oct. 3. Each event will be produced for television and broadcast live through a partnership with the Virginia Association of Broadcasters.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine and Republican challenger Corey Stewart have accepted invitations to participate in Virginia's oldest and most widely broadcast televised debate this fall.

"The People's Debate" will be held on Oct. 2 in the studio of WCVE-TV - Virginia Public Television - in collaboration with WTVR-CBS6. The media partners will distribute the debate to broadcasters statewide so the forum will be available to voters across Virginia.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia has resigned.

John Whitbeck announced Saturday that he was leaving his unpaid position next month. He's held the position since 2015.

The state GOP is fractured and did poorly in last year's state-level elections.

Many Republicans do not support Corey Stewart, a diehard supporter of President Donald Trump who recently won the GOP primary for this year's U.S. Senate race.

Stewart is a conservative provocateur who has frequently mocked members of his own party.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A tea party group backed by billionaire conservatives plans to sit out the U.S. Senate race in Virginia.

News outlets report that Americans for Prosperity will not support Republican nominee Corey Stewart as he tries to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine.

Americans for Prosperity has been supported by conservative industrialists Charles and David Koch. The group spent heavily to help Stewart's opponent in the GOP primary earlier this year and was a major spender in last year's election for governor.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Corey Stewart has won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Virginia and will face incumbent Tim Kaine in the November general election.

Stewart beat state lawmaker Nick Freitas and Chesapeake minister E.W. Jackson in Tuesday's race.

Stewart is a conservative provocateur who often feuds with members of his party. He's a one-time state chairman of President Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and nearly won the 2017 Republican nomination for governor.

He has pledged to run a "vicious" campaign against Kaine.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Republican is suing to try and get on the primary ballot for a U.S. Senate race.

Ivan Raiklin filed a lawsuit in federal court Tuesday against the Republican Party of Virginia and the state Board of Elections.

He alleges that party and state officials have unfairly kept him off the GOP primary ballot even though he collected the required number of signatures.

Party spokesman John March said the party followed the law in certifying candidates but declined to comment specifically on the lawsuit.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia Republicans hoping to upset Hillary Clinton's former running mate in a U.S. Senate race are clashing over who is more loyal to President Donald Trump.

Corey Stewart accused opponent Nick Freitas at a debate Thursday at Liberty University of being insufficiently supportive of the president and too-thin skinned to survive a tough general election against Democrat Tim Kaine.

Kaine is viewed as the favorite to win a second term to the Senate.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Even with new support from key GOP leaders, Medicaid expansion in Virginia still faces serious roadblocks. That includes a fierce intraparty squabble among Republicans and strong disagreement among expansion supporters on how to pay for it.

Those divisions were on display Thursday as both chambers of the GOP-controlled General Assembly debated whether Medicaid expansion should be included in the state budget. The House favors Medicaid expansion and the new hospital tax, which the Senate opposes.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A conservative minister announced he's joining the fight for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine in 2018.

E.W. Jackson announced his campaign Monday on The John Fredericks Show radio program. The lawyer-turned-preacher ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2013.

He joins Corey Stewart, a former state campaign chairman of President Donald Trump, and Del. Nick Freitas, as announced candidates.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam and former U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello urged Democrats to work together in this year's general election.

Their comments came Saturday evening at the party's annual Jefferson-Jackson fundraising dinner.

Northam defeated Perriello last week in a primary contest. Perriello said Saturday he "fully" endorses Northam.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Ralph Northam has won the Democratic nomination in Virginia's closely watched race for governor, defeating an insurgent challenger backed by U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Northam beat former congressman Tom Perriello, with most polls reporting Tuesday.

The lieutenant governor secured victory thanks in part to his longer time on the campaign trail and fundraising advantage. Northam had the support of the state Democratic Party's core constituencies, including teachers groups and African-American political and religious leaders.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Republican state senator running for governor is planning to call a legislative hearing to investigate Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe's plan to limit carbon emissions from power plants.

Sen. Frank Wagner tells The Richmond Times-Dispatch that he will convene an emergency meeting of the Joint Commission on Administrative Rules within a few weeks to question McAuliffe administration officials on the executive order. Wagner has said he will do everything in his "legislative authority" to stop the governor's power plant plan.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Democrat Ralph Northam has outspent rival Tom Perriello by more than 2 to 1 on TV advertising in Virginia's closely watched governor's race with less than four weeks before the primary.

Spokesman for both campaigns said Wednesday their media tracking showed Northam had spent $1.2 million while Perriello has spent more than $500,000.

On the Republican side, Ed Gillespie is the only candidate spending money on TV. He's spent more than $235,000, according to media tracking company Advertising Analytics LLC.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Republican state Sen. Frank Wagner says voters are flocking to his campaign in the final six weeks of the GOP primary for Virginia governor.

Wagner held a Richmond news conference Monday to tout his experience as a businessman, military veteran and long-time lawmaker, saying his record is winning over Republican voters.

Wagner repeatedly lambasted Ed Gillespie, a Washington insider early frontrunner in the GOP gubernatorial contest. Wagner accused Gillespie of trying to mislead voters with unrealistic promises to cut taxes as governor.

GOOCHLAND, Va. (AP) - The front-runner for the Republican nomination in Virginia's closely watched governor's race is expressing discomfort with series of vulgar and predatory comments about women President Donald Trump made in a recording 12 years ago.

Ed Gillespie said at a Republican debate Saturday in Goochland that he was offended by comments from a 2005 Access Hollywood tape in which Trump boasted about groping women.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Former President George W. Bush is set to host a fundraiser for Virginia Republican gubernatorial hopeful Ed Gillespie.

The Roanoke Times reports that the former president and wealthy businessmen will host Gillespie at a Dallas fundraiser Wednesday.

Gillespie was White House counselor under Bush, who donated $25,000 to Gillespie's political action committee last year.

Tickets for the Wednesday luncheon range from $1,000 to $25,000.

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie has won a straw poll in Fairfax County in the race for the GOP nomination for Virginia governor.

Gillespie took about 56 percent of the vote Saturday in a straw poll at Robinson Secondary School during a candidate event hosted by the Fairfax County Republican Committee.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Republican Governors Association has donated $5 million to a political-action committee to help the GOP take back the Virginia governor's mansion.

The donation is the largest in Virginia political history and suggests Republicans like their chances to win this year's race for governor. However, the RGA could take the money back if that outlook changes.

Democrats have won three of the past four governors' races in Virginia, where governors are limited to a single term.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman is dropping out of the race for the Republican nomination for governor of Virginia.

Wittman's campaign manager made the announcement Thursday afternoon.

Wittman represents the 1st Congressional District, which runs from Hampton Roads into the Fredericksburg area and Prince William County. He says he believes he can "do the most good for Virginia" by staying in Congress.
