Legislation has been introduced in Annapolis that would tighten the reporting of hate crimes on Maryland university campuses.
The measure comes in response to the fatal stabbing of a Bowie State University student at the University of Maryland, College Park.
It’s being sponsored by Democratic Delegate Angela Angel who has based the measure on regulations developed at College Park following the death of U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Richard Collins in May.
Under the measure investigations would be made public and schools would be required to report hate crimes and bias incidents at Maryland’s public universities.
It would also require training for freshmen students to increase their awareness of hate crimes.
Meanwhile, Maryland congressman Anthony Brown has introduced legislation in Washington that would hold university officials accountable for hate crimes.
It would require accreditors to assess a university’s preventive measures to be eligible for federal funds.
