There were more than 8 million tourists who came to Delaware in 2014.

That’s up from 7.5 million in 2013.

A new study found that they contributed $3 billion to the state’s gross domestic product or around 5 percent.

At the beaches the boom saw the rental market pass the $1 billion mark for Sussex County.

Statewide rental revenue went up by 8.8 percent between 2013 and 2014.

Linda Parkowski, director of the Delaware Tourism Office, called tourism an economic engine and a growth industry.

She attributed to this rise in tourism to recent efforts to improve Delaware’s regional brand such as a media campaign that includes television spots for the first time.
