Virginia Congressman Scott Taylor says Tangier Island will finally be betting a jetty as it sees its shores disappearing every year from erosion and sea level rise.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports Taylor announced that the federal approval process has been finally been concluded.
He said that construction should start this year and be finished by 2019.
The Eastern Shore Virginia Representative made the announcement during a visit to the island with Delegate Rob Bloxom.
It is hoped that the jetty will help protect the harbor and west channel from wave action and sheets of ice that pile up during the winter damaging work boats, docks and crab houses.
The paper reports that Governor Ralph Northam is expected to approve the state’s share of the cost at $495-thousand.
The total estimated cost is $2.4 million.
