Seven ponies on Chincoteague have come down with “swamp cancer”.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports it is not a true cancer but produces lesions on their bodies.

Denise Bowden with the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company says that the initial treatment for the disease will cost around $15-hundred per pony.

The paper reports that the ponies have not responded to an antibiotic so they are now being given another treatment with a success rate of as high as 80 percent.
