Rehoboth Beach Considers Barring Craft Breweries

Don Rush

There’s a move in Rehoboth Beach to keep out craft breweries that are not part of a restaurant.

And the new law being contemplated by city officials would place special rules that go beyond those for regular restaurants.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Mayor Sam Cooper believes breweries not attached to restaurants are simply industrial factories.

He worries about establishments whose main fare moves from food to all-alcohol.

But opponents of the measure such as the famed Dogfish Head brewpub say it does not make sense to pass up the expanding craft brewing business.

Jeff Hamer, who owns a brewpub along with some restaurants in the area, told the News Journal that the industry is only asking to be treated fairly.

There is only one brewpub in Rehoboth which is owned by Dogfish Head.
