Proposed Surcharge to Fund Clean Water Projects in Delaware

Don Rush

Delaware residents could see a surcharge of up to $80 on their personal income taxes for projects to improve the state’s water quality.

A measure has been introduced in the state House of Representatives that would impose a surcharge equal to ten percent of income liabilities.

It would be capped at $40 for individuals and $80 for joint filings.

WBOC reports that the measure would bring in around $20 million to help pay for water and waste water system upgrades over the next five years.

Gerald Street with the Kent County Conservancy told the television station that many homeowners contribute to the pollution of waterways.

The money would go into a lockbox for a trust that would pay for the projects.
