Primary Day in Delaware

official and campaign photos

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Thursday's Democratic U.S. Senate primary in Delaware pits one of the most successful politicians in state history against a political newcomer hoping to ride the wave of a growing antiestablishment movement within the party to an upset victory.

Thirty-eight-year-old Kerri Evelyn Harris, an Air Force veteran and former auto body mechanic, says her primary contest against three-term incumbent Tom Carper is a fight for the soul of the Democrat party.

Harris is among a wave of young activists, emboldened by the 2016 presidential campaign of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, trying to push Democratic Party politics nationwide farther to the left.

But she faces a huge uphill fight against Carper, a former two-term governor who also served five terms in the U.S. House and has been unbeaten since 1976.

Other Races

Meanwhile on the GOP side Sussex County Council member Rob Arlett is involved in a three primary that includes Gene Truono.

Democrats will also be looking at four candidates for state Attorney General and three in the race for State Auditor.

In past mid-term primaries only around 9 percent of Democrats turnout while 17 percent come out for Republicans.
