Employee Claims DNR Demotion Over Comments on Jealous

Department Logo

Candy Thomson is suing the Maryland Department of Natural Resources charging that she was demoted because of a profane Facebook comment about Democratic Candidate Ben Jealous in the governor’s race.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the complaint was filed in federal court on Tuesday citing her First Amendment rights.

Her comment was made on the post by Daily Record reporter Bryan Sears about Jealous’s initial decision to keep a report from a debate panel.

Thomson is a former reporter for the Baltimore Sun.

She removed her comments when told to do so and her media duties were taken away.

The department says that she has not been declassified, demoted or suspended.

The paper reports that she is scheduled to leave the department in November after submitted her resignation in July.

She is asking for reinstatement, court costs and attorney’s fees.
