Chincoteague Refuge Fees Could Go Up, No Day Pass

If you’re going to visit the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge this summer you might be facing a fee increase.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering increasing the cost of a weekly pass from $15 to $20.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that annual passes would go from $30 to $40 while the charges for taxis will now be $5.

Under the proposal the daily pass will be gone.

And the paper reports that some visitors thought that was unfair.

The refuge takes in $1.3 million from visitors annually providing $155 million in local economic activity.

The Daily Times reports that Chincoteague local officials and chamber of commerce declined to comment on the proposal.
