Construction of a $756 million parallel tunnel on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel broke ground yesterday.
There were dozens of dignitaries on hand to attend the ceremony for the Thimble Shoals project.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the Chesapeake Grill restaurant and the Virginia Originals gift shop where the ceremony was held will disappear with the construction.
There is a toll increase to pay for the construction.
But officials stress that the construction cost will still be the lowest per mile compared to others projects on the East Coast.
