Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver says he wants those who wrote anti-Confederate graffiti in colored chalk on the sidewalk and steps around the County Courthouse to be charged.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the State’s Attorney had advised the County Sheriff’s office that it can file malicious destruction of property charges for writing on the building.
On his Facebook page County Sheriff Mike Lewis said he intended to file charges calling the perpetrators “thugs” and “punks”.
Lewis said after reviewing camera footage two suspects have been identified and that he expects arrests to be make very soon.
The Salisbury Police Department was advised that it cannot file charges for the sidewalks.
Phrases such as “Tear Down Winder” and “Winder is Scum” were apparent references to the ongoing call for removal of a historical marker on Main Street about Confederate General John Winder who oversaw the notorious confederate prisoner of war camps.
Another phrase ”Lynching Happened Here” was an apparent reference to the 1931 lynching of Mathew Williams an African American who was accused of murder.
