After a fatal crash that took five lives along Delaware Route 1 local officials are asking state officials about the safety of the essential highway.

The Wilmington New Journal reports that the accident caused state Senator Bruce Ennis (D) who represents the New Castle County area about the need for a cable barriers along the highway.

DelDOT Secretary Jennifer Cohan sent a memo to Ennis and state Representative Kevin Hensley (R)  to assure the two another 11.5 miles of cable barrier will be added to the highway between Odessa and Smyrna by the end of the year.

The paper reports that another 12 miles south of Smyrna are planned after that project is completed.

The new guard rails have been in the works since December when a study was conducted and the okay for the project to move forward was given in March with design now underway.
