A new report finds that 74 of 98 large meat-processing plants it looked at nationwide dumped illegal levels of nitrogen, fecal bacteria and other pollutants into waterways since January of 2016.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that the study noted Allen Harim is looking at $241-thousand fine for dozens of wastewater-related violations at its plant in Harbson.
The company has appealed that decision.
Meanwhile, the paper reports that Mountaire Farms could also incur $625-thousand in fines for its plant in Millsboro.
It has also paid fines for its facility in Selbyville.
Finally, the News Journal reports that Perdue agreed to pay a 75 percent discount on a fine of just over $77-thousand for wastewater violations by working with the The Nature Conservancy on a reforestation project.
The report was done by the non-profit Environmental Integrity Project based in D.C.
